Nursing Home Injuries / Elder Abuse
Large numbers of elderly or disabled people are receiving care in one of the many nursing home facilities across the country. Sadly, however, between one and two million people over the age of 65 have been injured or mistreated by someone on whom they depended on for care. (1)
Victor A. Rotolo, founder of The Rotolo Law Firm is a lawyer who has spent his life protecting people, first as a police officer and now as an attorney.
While we tend to rely on our medical staff to take care of our well–being, a doctor may be held liable for medical neglect or malpractice involving an elderly patient if the doctor’s treatment is considered careless or actively harmful. Nursing home staff must be careful and work to prevent any possible injury or neglect or else they may also be held liable for any injuries sustained. Nursing homes can be held liable for improper supervision, hiring unqualified staff, inadequate supervision, or the use of dangerous equipment.
It is important to pay attention to any early signs of elder abuse in order to prevent serious injuries or even death. Some signs of neglect or abuse are:
- Pressure sores
- Unexplained infections
- Unexplained fractures, broken bones or dislocated bones
- Malnutrition or unexplained weight loss
- Slip and fall accidents
- Medication errors
- Poor personal hygiene
- Poor supervision
- Over sedation
- Inappropriate physical restraints
If you see any of these signs, seek medical help immediately and consider consulting an attorney experienced in the rights of the elderly.

Families can take a number of steps to prevent elder abuse: maintain frequent contact with elders to monitor signs of abuse and visit caregivers on a regular basis to ensure they are providing the proper care. Before selecting a long–term care facility, research and gain as much information on the facility as possible.
If you believe that someone you love is being abused in a nursing home or by a medical caregiver, be sure to seek immediate medical assistance. The attorneys at The Rotolo Law Firm understand that this can be a difficult time and will do everything in their power to ensure the elder is treated properly.
